Since the ancient time, this place has been closely connected to national events, rituals and ceremonies. King and Kikoe Okimi offered their prayers for a safe trip before a departure. This is the first “Haisho” (sacred place of prayer) on Agari-uma

Thick forest located behind the Shurei Gate is called “Sunuhyan-Utaki.” The stone gate which is equivalent to the place of prayer at regular shrine was built in 1519 during Ryukyu Kingdom era (King Sho Shinou) by Nishito from Taketomi Island who was chosen by royal court because of his great talent. It’s been said that prayers were offered for a safe trip when successive kings venture out of a castle, or depart for events like Agari-umai and Kikoe Okimi ‘s “Oaraori” (inauguration ceremony). The stone gate was once destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa, but was rebuilt in 1957. It was then disassembled and repaired. In the year 2000, the stone gate was designated a World Heritage as part of “Gusuku sites and related properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.” As a sacred site that has close connections with national events, rituals and ceremonies since the ancient time, many worshipers still visit the site today.
